Greetings Golfers,
How’s your grip? Not your grip on life … but your golf grip.
Most people grip the club too much in their palms. Though it feels really strong, and is good for Tug-of-War … the palm grip is not good for a golf swing. The club swings much easier while being held in the fingers. Just hold a club with your thumb and forefinger and let it swing back and forth like a pendulum in a clock. Now try it by holding the club in your palm. Pretty big difference.
When I was about 10 years old, my grandpa took me out to dinner at a steakhouse. He was a tough old Scotsman, and was disgusted watching me try to cut my steak like a caveman. He showed me how to hold a knife and fork in my fingers – not in my palms. It felt weak and terrible. I thought I was going to starve … but I kept at it. Once, I got the hang of it, I was much more in control and my elbows weren’t flying all over the place anymore.
Same idea with the golf grip. Put the club in the fingers of your lefthand in a diagonal position. Once on the club, the “V” should point to your right shoulder. Then, put your right hand on the club, and keep the grip between your knuckles and finger tips. Not between your knuckles and your palm. The righthand “V” should point between your chin and right shoulder.
Just like when I learned to hold silverware in my fingers, this finger golf grip will feel weak and uncomfortable. But, in no time at all, the finger grip will feel strong and comfortable. You will gain much more feel and control of the club during your swing. And, you’ll be able to whip the club with greater speed – the real secret to distance.
Who knows … your new golf grip may even translate to a new grip on your life … with more feel and control. That wouldn’t be a bad thing.
